Blacksmith anvils, tools, welders, workshop equipment.

Finding the right equipment for the right price is whats its all about in the home workshop. I have years of experience in the metal working trade and really enjoy using a great tool, be it an anvil or a welder. Anvils are still being made but finding a good anvil is as easy as it used to be. New prices are sometimes more than most are prepared to pay and used ones in good condition can be hard to come by. Learner blacksmiths can make do with railroad track anvils or even just large lumps of metal found at any recycling yard. Blacksmithing is a lot about making your own tooling and equipment, a good blacksmith can make many useful tools on his anvil, from tongs to hammers are all possible with the right knowledge. Heat treating is also a useful skill that makes the basic tool made on the anvil into a durable device able to handle the harsh environment of steel working.

The workshop itself is a very important part of the equation also. I have a seperate shed for all my metal work but you can make do with what you have, a garage can be fine, if one is careful with the hot metal that tends to fly around. Having a good workspace around the anvil is also important to achieve good blacksmithing results.
